British PM Cameron calls national security meeting after “shocking” killing of man believed to be serving soldier; 2 suspects shot by police at the scene; eyewitnesses say attackers use machete-like knives.
A man believed to be a soldier was killed in London’s southeast Woolwich district on Wednesday in what authorities are treating as a suspected terror attack. The two alleged suspects were shot by police and apprehended.
According to AFP, some eyewitnesses to the attack said that the assailants used machete-like knives in an attempt to behead the soldier.

ITV News aired a video purporting to show the scene of the attack. In the video, one of the alleged suspects approaches the camera with bloodied hands, carrying what appear to be two meat cleavers.
“I apologize that women had to witness this today,” the alleged suspect states in the video, pointing backward toward what appears to be the suspect’s body. “But in our lands our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your governments, they don’t care about you.”
British Prime Minister David Cameron has called a meeting of his government’s emergency Cobra security committee after the killing of the man in London, his office said on Wednesday. Britain’s government convenes Cobra meetings only to deal with incidents that have implications for national security.
Cameron said on Wednesday that there were “strong indications” that the killing in London was terror-related.
“It is the most appalling crime,” Cameron said, before cutting short a visit to Paris. “The police are urgently seeking the full facts about this case but there are strong indications that it is a terrorist incident.”
Police said in a statement that “a number of weapons were reportedly being used in the attack, and this included reports of a firearm,”
Security was tightened in the area immediately after the incident. Helicopters hovered above and nearby roads were sealed off by the police.
